The next edition of the Latin American Day will take place on April 20th, 2012, at the University of St. Gallen

The Idea of Latin American Day

The Latin American Day is a project of the world’s largest student organization AIESEC and is carried out for the fourth time this year.

It provides a discussion platform for students, companies and personalities from politics, media, economy and culture on the most relevant subjects about Latin America. The main goal is to create an informative exchange of current issues related to Latin America. Through interactive discussions and workshops, around 100 selected students have the chance to gain an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and challenges of the Latin American continent. Moreover, this possibility should be used to obtain perception for Latin American cultural diversity.

The project was founded in 2007 in response to a growing interest in Latin American topics among students. Since then, the Latin American Day has given the opportunity to a large number of interested students to benefit from the exchange with renowned experts and decision makers from many different fields.

In the past, AIESEC was delighted to welcome the Ambassador of Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, and Brazil, as well as Dr. Thomas Knöpfel in his function as a member of the Executive Committee of Holcim Group Latin America.

This year’s conference focuses on the often underestimated diversity of resources of Latin America and its influence on politics and society.
Vision of LAD 2012

With rising world population and seemingly unbounded growth, the actual shortage of resources has increasingly become the focus of politics and economy. Many of these resources have its origin far from Europe in the rich nature of Latin America. The distribution of these goods has an enormous potential for conflicts in both traditional resources such as metals, oil and land area as well as in everyday household goods such as water, food etc. A sustainable solution to current and future problems depends above all on the next generation of decision makers.

According to the guiding topic “Latin America’s Treasures – Scramble for a Continent’s Resources”, this year’s project is therefore to raise the participants’ awareness for the huge and diverse wealth of resources of the continent. In this way, two sides of the same coin of resource support in Latin America are to be discussed for raising attention to the economic, political and social implications.

Thus, participants are expected to acquire explicit knowledge and sharpen their understanding of the problem. Above all they should become informed about different perspectives and points of view in order to break familial patterns of thinking.
