FTA between the EFTA states and Mercosur

On September 16, 2025, the Member States of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) – Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland – and the countries of Mercosur – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay – successfully signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

With the agreement, over 96% of Swiss exports to the Mercosur states will benefit from tariff concessions in the medium term, and around 95% will be completely exempt from customs duties – in some cases after transitional periods. In view of the high tariffs in the Mercosur states, the free trade agreement will enable considerable tariff savings of up to CHF 180 million per year. Alongside the agreements with the EU and China, this is the greatest potential for tariff savings of all Swiss free trade agreements.
