The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 and constitute a universal call to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure that, by 2030, all people enjoy peace and prosperity, under a human rights and gender perspective, so as to leave no one behind.
The 17 SDGs are integrated as they recognise that action in one area will affect outcomes in other areas and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Countries have committed to prioritizing the progress of those furthest behind. However, according to ECLAC data, serious structural challenges persist in the Latin American and Caribbean region, with low investment and productivity, poverty and inequality, which have been accentuated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Geneva International is home to more than 40 multilateral organizations with diverse mandates and thematic areas, but which carry out their functions under the cross-cutting vision of the SDGs.
In this regard, the VII Podium will explore the role and challenges from the perspective of multilateral organizations based in Geneva for the achievement of sustainable development within the Latin American and Caribbean region under the current complex situation and its direct impact on civil society.
